Mexico gets the nod to host a Motocross Grand Prix in 2012, the United States is dropped and two GPs will be staged AFTER the Motocross of Nations.

These were the key details to emerge when Youthstreamn announced its provisional calendar for 2012 this week.

According to BikesportNZ.com’s sources in the United States it was a sad case of “use it or lose it” as regards the US being dropped from the calendar.

The American fans stayed away in droves from the USGP this year and most that did show up had no idea who half the European riders were, much less cared.

“Actually, Mexico will probably get 10 times the spectators that Glen Helen did, maybe more,” said our friend in California.

“Mexicans actually embrace international events, and the promoter is very sharp. He drew 15,000 people to an international race last year with Everts, Tortelli, etc.

“They will root for anybody, Americans won’t.”

It is unclear, of course, just how the organisers will guarantee everyone’s safety in Mexico as the drug cartels continue to wage their own wars with authority. Remember the ISDE in Mexico was cut short because of the violence.

However, following the publication of the 2012 Provisional FIM Motocross World Championship Calendar, the GP series organisers, Youthstream, and former USGP host site in America, Glen Helen, were quick to confirm their relationship is extremely good and the will to co-operate remains strong.

The decision to not put the USGP on the 2012 calendar is based on the fact that there is a lack of interest from the American industries and due to the low presence of top American riders. This is an almighty shame as the organisation and the quality of the racing at the USGP in Glen Helen was really impressive, Youthstream said in a press release.

Youthstream and Glen Helen will however continue working on having a USGP in the future with the presence of the top American riders.

Glen Helen track owner Bud Felkamp said: “We are hoping to find support from the American Motocross industries so that we can continue organizing the USGP with the top US and European riders, and have the race of the century, it would be such a big loss for the American fans if we lose this race.

“Glen Helen is the best track in the world and we would love seeing Villopoto, Stewart, Dungey, Reed and all our other great riders battle it out against the likes of Cairoli, Desalle, Roczen – so we count on the support of the American riders, fans and industry.”
